First Line Friday

"As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic vermin."

-Franz Kafka (Metamorphosis)

  1. My translation says "insect" instead of "vermin," but I don't think it changes the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the first line.

I like how the sentence is "backloaded"- with the most impactful word at the very end.

After scratching your head and asking yourself if you read that right, you are compelled to read on.
